ANIMALS THAT EAT TERMITES

Anteater

As a child, you may have adored the anteater. An animal that is specifically adapted to eating termites, these unusual looking animals are quite endearing. Featuring a long snout that they use in order to reach deep within termite mounds, these animals that live mainly in South America can consume up to 35,000 ants and termites a day. It has a long tongue that it flickers up to 160 times per minute that termites stick to. It uses its long claws to dig into termite mounds, and anteaters scoop them up as well. You may think at that rate that an anteater could easily destroy an entire termite colony. In fact, it could, but it never does. It always leaves some intact to which it will eventually return to. Their goal is to consume termites as quickly as possible before they become agitated and attack.

Birds

Birds can be dangerous predators to termite colonies. This is because they prefer to swoop down and just snatch one or two at a time with no other termite even noticing. When termites swarm to form a new colony, they attract the attention of birds, which can catch these insects in the air and devour them quickly. In fact, swarming termites are at their most vulnerable, being slow and having no real defenses while in the air. All types of birds will eat termites, which is why they can be decimated when swarming because they will attract the attention of all sorts of birds in the area.

Bats

Bats will eat all sorts of insects, including termites, and they aren’t picky. After all, a meal is a meal. Bats mainly eat termites when they are swarming since bats catch their food in the air.
