Cultures That Eat Termites, Part 2

Some people don’t think twice about eating insects, including termites. In fact, they may even be a tasty treat, especially if they are dipped in chocolate first. Termites and other insects are an important food source for many cultures around the world. They are high in protein, low in fat, and many people love the taste. Since there are billions of insects on the planet today, they are abundant when other food sources aren’t.

MORE CULTURES THAT EAT TERMITES

Australia’s Aborigines

The indigenous Aborigines have long eaten insects and relied upon them as a good source of much-needed protein. Insects used to be prepared by cooking them in the sand. Termites and moths would be stirred around to not only help remove their wings and legs, but also for them to cook in the hot days of summer. Today, insects are prepared in a modern way, with pots and pans. Grubs and ants are popular for roasting.

Japan

Before the modern age, Japan struggled for food as well when times were tough either from drought or from wars. Many rural Japanese turned to bugs for survival, and since insects were plentiful (and still are) in Japan, they were incorporated into their cuisine. You’ll find all types of insects on Japanese menus at restaurants across the country. From termites and silk moth pupae to cicada and grasshoppers, odds are, you can find whatever insect you are looking for. They are fried, boiled, and dipped in chocolate for dessert.

The Western World

We here in the West have yet to adopt entomophagy. The Netherlands is one of the few European countries where you’ll see some people beginning to embrace the practice. Eating bugs has become a challenge on shows such as Survivor and Fear Factor. Some candy shops sell chocolate-covered insects in the US. Common items are made from insects, such as red lipstick or red candy, which uses the cochineal, an insect native to South America that produces a red dye.

In fact, we all have eaten bugs, and we’ll continue to do so. That is because processed food has some small percentage of bug parts in them and that is allowed by the Food and Drug Administration. If you think about it, it’s impossible to completely rid food of bugs, especially small ones. Thus, the FDA has implemented guidelines for how many bug parts can be in certain foods. From orange juice to frozen spinach, you’ll find insects. Thinking about it will be the problem, but eating them, you don’t even notice — and they are good for you, too!
