ANATOMY OF A TERMITE

Like all insects, termites have three body parts: a head, a thorax, and an abdomen. However, unlike other insects, termites look different. Termites have a very uniform, straight waist, or thorax, compared to other insects. On their head, they have straight antennae; ants’ are bent. Termites have relatively large and straight abdomens compared to other insects as well as large heads. However, the workers and the soldier termites are largely blind. After all, they do live underground for most of their lives.

When you see termites, it’s usually when they are swarming. Swarming termites are reproductive males and females who are looking to start a new colony. They have wings at this stage, and both wings are the same size. This makes them different from ants. Oftentimes, you may find a bunch of wings lying around. This is because once termites find a mate, they shed their wings because they will no longer be needed. In fact, the male and female (now the king and queen) will never see the light of day again.

What makes termites so hard to identify as well is the fact that they are incredibly small. They range in size from only ⅛ of an inch to one inch in length. Thus, at a quick glance, they look like any other insect, especially ants. However, by looking at termites closely, you can distinguish them from ants.

WHY CHOOSE ARIZONA TERMITE SPECIALISTS FOR ALL OF YOUR TERMITE ERADICATION NEEDS

It’s hard to fault an insect that evolution has made so perfect for its job. These insects are beyond successful — you have to be to survive for thousands of years virtually unchanged. While termites appear very simple in nature, they have a very complex social society that is communicated mainly through movement and pheromones emitted by the queen and sometimes by the king.
